May 11, 2010 - PRLog -- Brett Thompson of Jerome, Idaho has wanted nothing more then to win at Rocky Mountain Raceways in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series. And while the win eluded him Saturday night in round two of the 10-race championship series, his third place performance vaulted him into second place in the point standings and more importantly showed that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in this year's championship.

When Thompson clicked off a 15.071 second qualifying lap around the 3/8-mile banked oval of RMR this past Saturday, he and his team thought this could be the night. A night to set fast time and win the race. Part of that was indeed true but not for Thompson. Instead, Thompson settled for second quick time being bested by a 15.004 second lap put in by Steve Jones (eventual race winner).

Thompson started the 75-lap race at the rear of the field and wasted no time moving his RTTI Dodge to the front. The first 59 laps were run without caution with the leaders setting a torrid pace. Thompson moved from outside the top ten to the sixth position by lap ten. By lap 20 he had moved into third with eyes on catching the leaders.

He ran in third from lap 20-31 then took over the second spot for the next seven circuits. Steve Jones got around his Dodge on lap 40 dropping Thompson back to third through lap 50. On lap 50, Thompson and Jones waged a spirited battle with Thompson moving into the race lead on lap 51. He held the point through lap 64 when Jones edged inside to take the top spot. Two laps later Zan Sharp nosed his way into second leaving Thompson in third where he would finish the race.

"It was a good night for us but I would have loved to have won this thing," Thompson said. "We had an awesome car that was really good off the corner. Both Steve (Jones, race winner) and Zan (Sharp, second place) were just a tick better through the center of the corner and that ended up being the difference."

Thompson's third place performance moved him up to second in the RMCS championship standings, just 29-points out of the lead. The RMCS awards points for qualifying, heat race finishing position, main event finishing position, and passing points in the main event based on original starting position. "It is really all about race points which means we have to qualify really well in order to take advantage of the invert and passing points," Thompson said. "This was a good event for us so we just have to keep doing the same thing and it will pay off."

Thompson's teammate Kenny Vanderham made is 2010 series debut and finished on the lead lap in the tenth position.

The next event for Brett Thompson will be a NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway May 22-23 and then back in the RMCS on Monday, May 31st at Rocky Mountain Raceways.
