My name is Charles Ginault. I have been a devoted Rolex watches collector for half of my life.

My father passed me an Omega Seamaster watch for my college graduation. That Omega Seamaster watch is a James Bond watch seen in one of the famous 007 James bond movie. It was the beginning I picked up this hobby - collecting watches.

I then focused on collecting James Bond watches, especially James Bond's Rolex watches.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600, however, is not a James Bond watch at all. The Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 may share similar design of James Bond's Rolex Submariner, but the Rolex Sea-Dweller watch is just not an 007 instrument. But somehow, I found myself very fond of the Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600. In 2002, I picked one Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 for 4,000 something dollars at the local authorized dealer. It was a 2002 K-serial Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600, with the Helium Escapement at the 9 o'clock side that is designed particularly to this Rolex watch model.

I have been very happy wearing this Rolex professional sports watch on daily basis. I wore it to the mountains, to the sea, and even to the sky. A couple months ago, I slide while I was trying out my brother's latest Yamaha R1 on 92 towards Half Moon Bay in California. The Rolex Sea-Dweller was on my wrist. The moment I found myself okay and then stood up: I was screaming "Shit" in my head. I crashed the Rolex Sea-Dweller! At that time, I didn't even bother to check if the Yamaha R1 is broken or not.

Almost immediately right after I came home, I called Rolex Service Center in L.A. The lady there politely asked me to send the Rolex watch (wreckage) to L.A., and they will take a look at how bad it is damaged, then give me a quote of restoration expanses. I got the call a month later. The restoration will knock me off $2,800, and I'll have to wait at least 6 months because they have to send everything back to Switzerland.

Okay, I broke the glass, lost the second hand on the dial, got the watch case and the bracelet some serious scratches... But in no way this kind of restoration will be $2,800. Hey, polite lady in Rolex Service Center, for this kind of money, I can grab an "in mint condition" used Rolex Submariner or even Sea-Dweller off eBay or Craigslist.

Frustrated, I felt. Then I thought, why can't I restore the Rolex Sea-Dweller myself? Grandpa is an watchmaker before he came to the States. I can surely use his professional knowledge and, maybe, un-rusted skills. My cousin George operates a small CNC mill shop nearby. I can use his help, too!
