On May 9, flight CZ6051 of China Southern Airlines Xinjiang Branch set off at Urumqi International Airport and reached at the newly built Jiaohe Airport in Turpan at 12:17. This is the test-fly for the new airport. On May 18, the airport will be put into commercial running officially.
Led by Chen Lin, the deputy general manager of China Southern Airlines Xinjiang Branch, the test group tested the navigate facilities, lighting system and flight procedures of the airport. Runways and taxiways were also checked carefully.
Jiaohe Airport is located at northwest of Turpan, 10 km from the downtown, 35 km from UNESCO world heritage Jiaohe Ancient City.
As the world’s lowest altitude airport, Jiaohe Airport is 154 m below sea level, 119 m below the previous world record, Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport (KTRM) in California, United States.
The flight time from Urumqi to Turpan is about half an hour. When Jiaohe airport is officially put into operation, tourists can travel between Urumqi and Turpan one hour faster than taking tour buses.
As is known to all, Turpan is famous for its delicious grapes and raisins. In order to make the style of the new airport melt with strong local characteristics, the terminal was made in accord with the style of local special drying rooms which are used to make raisins out of grapes.
