May 10, 2010 - PRLog -- During the City sponsored Douglas County Chamber of Commerce Georgia Power Coffee Card Exchange on Thursday, May 13th, City workers and staff will be wearing red to observe travel and tourism. The Douglasville Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) will also commemorate the day by awarding the top hospitality workers in the City.

Why celebrate tourism? Community support is important for tourism, as it is an activity that affects the entire community. Tourism is big business in Georgia. It's the second-leading industry in the state. Tourism employs more than 241,000 Georgians and creates a total economic impact of more than $34 billion.

Tourism has a variety of economic impacts. Tourists contribute to sales, profits, jobs, tax revenues, and income in an area. Some effects are primary or direct effects and others are secondary or indirect or induced effects. The most direct effects occur within the primary tourism areas that include lodging, restaurants, transportation, amusements, and retail trade. Tourism generates close to $57 Million a day in the State of Georgia. Each Georgia household pays $518 less in local and state taxes due to direct tourism expenditures. Tourism also has secondary effects that influence most areas of the economy. These effects can be seen by looking at changes in sales, income, and employment resulting from tourism activity.

In January, the tourism industry presented a check representing the $850.6 million in state tax revenue generated from tourism-related expenditures to representatives at the Georgia State Capital.

Understanding the impact of tourism, the CVB strives to make Douglasville and Georgia a leading tourist destination by addressing the greatest opportunities for the CVB to create, execute, promote, and attract events and activities that will bring visitors to Douglasville and Douglas County.
