TransVision and Tri-City Health Center, will host Alameda County’s first ever Transgender Health and Resource Conference on Friday, May 14, 2010 at Preservation Park’s Nile Hall in Oakland from 10 am to 4 pm. The transgender community is severely underserved in Alameda County and the East Bay. This health and resource conference will provide an opportunity for transgender people living in the East Bay to network and access services and resources and is free and open to the transgender community.
All transgender and gender variant people living in the East Bay are invited to participate in the Transgender Health and Resource Conference. Over 20 agencies and organizations serving the transgender community have confirmed their participation. These include employers and social services that aim to empower transgender community members living in the East Bay. Featured speakers will include Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland), a founding member and Vice Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus and Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Oakland City Councilmember At-Large Rebecca Kaplan, and Vicky Kolakowski, Candidate for Alameda County Superior Court Judge.
“I am proud to collaborate with Tri-City Health Center in this historic step to advocate for the transgender community of the East Bay,” said Congresswoman Lee. “This conference brings vital attention to the inequalities faced by transgender individuals. I am pleased that our service providers are working to empower and protect our community.”
The Alameda County Transgender Health and Resource Conference co-sponsors are Kaiser Permanente, The Transgender Law Center, and Center of Excellence for Transgender Health at UCSF. The event is endorsed by Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-9), Congressman George Miller (D-7), and Senator Ellen Corbett (D-10).
Planned by Tri-City Health Center’s TransVision program, The Transgender Health and Resource Conference will feature health screenings (H1N1 Vaccines, blood pressure, and Body Mass Index (BMI)), workshops on hormone therapy and transgender legal issues, transgender health care information, employers, and gifts bags to all attendees.
TransVision is a health and support program serving transgender people provided through Tri-City Health Center, a non-profit community based health organization serving Alameda County, currently funded by the Alameda County Office of AIDS Administration. TransVision hosts the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance event held each year in Oakland in November.
