Leap Into Summer At Reading Camp

Registration is under way for the Summer Reading Camp, a three week summer program for children in grades 1-12 who are experiencing difficulties with reading and writing. The program is being offered by Literacy Empowerment Action Plan of WNY.

May 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Registration is under way for the Summer Reading Camp, a three week summer program for children in grades 1-12 who are experiencing difficulties with reading and writing. The program is being offered by Literacy Empowerment Action Plan of WNY, Inc. (LEAP of WNY).
Children will receive a reading assessment by a certified reading specialist to determine their reading level. Each instructional session includes one on one instruction in reading and writing from certified teachers and trained tutors, based on the child’s individual needs. Individual goals will be established for each child. A balanced approach to literacy and research–based strategies are used. Instructional focus will include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling and writing. Each session will also include a group activity in which children interact with their peers through cooperative learning. The program will provide all instructional materials for each child and include an activity break with a healthy snack.

Schedule:  Monday- Thursday July 5-22, 2010
Time:  9:30am-11:00am  or  11:30am-1:00pm
Fee:  $255.00 Register Early!  Early Bird Registration only $220.00 by June 7th. Priority given
to returning students. A limited number of partial scholarships are available. Please call LEAP for information.

Literacy Empowerment Action Plan of WNY -(LEAP) was founded in 2007 by literacy specialists Dr. Gillian Richardson and Carol Peszko. LEAP is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) that provides reading instruction, diagnostic assessments, professional development, family literacy programs and enrichment programs. In January of 2010 they opened a second center in a high need area of Tonawanda, New York. The Powerful Literacy Center and Children's Library operates a circulating library for the Sheridan Parkside Community and provides free reading programs, computer literacy training and academic tutoring.
