May 7, 2010 – San Diego, Ca. – San Diego Boca FC (NPSL) have announced their entry into the distinguished Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Region IV qualifying round will take place Friday, May 21 through Sunday, May 23, 2010 in Sacramento, California.
San Diego Boca FC will face NPSL Western Division rival Bay Area Ambassadors in their first match of group play at 2:00 p.m. on the opening day of the US Open Cup Tournament. The other competitors in Group B to match up with San Diego Boca FC include the French Soccer Academy from Washington and the Arizona Pros.
Boca FC Coach Papo Santos stated, “We are excited about participating in the US Open Cup as I have been here before. This is a special tournament that has a lot history. A short term goal for our club in this tournament is to get through to the next two rounds to face the next set of strong teams and see if we can face a MLS club. We will use this US Open Cup experience as an opportunity to look to continue to develop the rhythm of the team as we compete in our current NPSL season. You never know when David meets Goliath what can happen.”
Unlike qualifying rounds of previous years, both teams that reach the finals will qualify for the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. In this round, the qualifiers from the first round around the country will compete against one another, as well as teams from the United Soccer League’s Second Division to advance. In the third round, professional sides from Major League Soccer and the United Soccer League’s First Division enter into the tournament. During this last stage, competition becomes single-elimination.
