May 6, 2010 - PRLog -- On Sunday, May 30th, of Memorial Day weekend, New York City’s legendary rock club, The Bitter End at 147 Bleecker Street, will feature 17-year old award-winning songwriter, Lisa Occhino, at 7:15 pm during the Singer/Songwriter Sessions. Lisa will be performing originals from her recently released iTunes album, Discovery, and will have CDs available to raise funds for the Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic Outreach music program to provide music lessons for needy children. According to Larry Oakes of The Bitter End, Lisa is among less than 1% of performers under 18 who have ever been invited to perform at the Singer/Songwriter Sessions. Since 1961, The Bitter End's famous brick wall stage has launched the careers of thousands of artists such as Miles Davis, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Bette Midler, Lady Gaga, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Patti La Belle, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor, along with dozens of famous comedians. A Stamford, Connecticut, resident, Lisa Occhino began songwriting at age 12 and has since experimented with fusing elements of jazz, rock, classical, Latin, and pop genres. Although piano is her main instrument, Lisa’s other musical interests include guitar, harmonica, marimba, xylophone, and other mallet instruments. At 15, her original jazz tune, “Back in the Swing of Things,” was selected for the Stamford Young Artists concert at UConn Stamford. The following year, her jazz composition “Midnight Blues” was performed by the Stamford Young Artists. She has been a featured performer at the Stamford Town Center’s Jazz on the Plaza series. Lisa has received numerous awards for outstanding musical achievements including an Official Citation for Meritorious Achievement from Lt. Governor Fedele of Connecticut, the 2010 statewide Connecticut High School Arts Awards for music, an induction into the Tri-M Music Honor Society, an award for excellence in music from the Stamford Board of Education, among others. She has studied with accomplished musicians, recording artists, and vocalists and has taken workshops in Connecticut and New York for piano, music theory, songwriting, and production. Lisa received a Songwriting and Composition Scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where she plans to double major in songwriting and music business.
