Adding to its reputation as one of the nation’s top ranked colleges, Iona College was recently included in The Princeton Review’s 2010 Guide to Green Colleges. It earned the distinction of being included among only 286 institutions of higher education nationwide for demonstrating an exemplary commitment to sustainability. The vast majority in the list are major universities and include the ”Ivy League” schools.
“It is quite an honor for Iona College to not only be recognized by The Princeton Review for our commitment to creating a green campus but to be ranked alongside the nation’s preeminent universities for this achievement. We are particularly pleased because, as a Catholic, Christian Brothers’ college, we are called upon through Catholic social teaching to be good stewards of our earth,” said Dr. Warren Rosenberg, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs of Iona College.
The Princeton Review stated in the introduction to the guide that it “embodies our philosophy that finding your ‘best fit’ school means looking at everything from the school’s academic offerings to its extracurricular options and now, even its commitment to going green. We recognize that there is a rising interest among students in attending colleges that practice, teach, and support environmentally responsible choices.”
The Princeton Review partnered with the United States Green Building Council (USBG), a leading national nonprofit organization that promotes sustainability in the design and construction of campus buildings, to develop the criteria and to make the selections. Of the 697 schools that The Princeton Review gave “Green Ratings” to in 2009, the 286 in the guide received scores in the 80th or higher percentile. The Princeton Review noted, “All of the schools are exemplary green institutions. Each and every one of them understands the urgent need to implement an infrastructure that will allow students to live and learn sustainably.”
