May 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Beacon – Elant at Fishkill has been deemed deficiency-free by New York State Department of Health surveyors, who conducted a Certification Survey of the 160-bed property from April 19 through April 21.

"It is deeply rewarding to be a part of a team of caregivers and service providers who are so devoted to improving the quality of our residents’ lives,” said Elant at Fishkill Vice President and Executive Director George Michaels. “The deficiency-free survey is a tribute to the tremendous effort our staff puts forth everyday, for which I am truly thankful."

A Certification Survey is conducted onsite on a yearly basis to determine whether a facility meets the Medicare and Medicaid quality and performance standards. The survey team observes resident care, staff/resident interaction, and environment; they also review medical records and other documentation. Using established protocols, the team interviews a sample of residents and family members about their life within the nursing home, and interviews caregivers and administrative staff.

Only seven percent of all nursing homes surveyed in New York State in 2009 achieved “Substantial Compliance,” which means they were deficiency-free or received only minor deficiencies. In 2009, nursing homes in New York State received an average of seven citations during their health department surveys. The national average is 11.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment in an environment of heightened surveillance,” said Nick Lanza, senior vice president in charge of Operations for Elant, Inc. “This deficiency-free survey validates the commitment to excellence of the Elant organization. The staff at Elant at Fishkill epitomizes that commitment to excellence.”
