You Can Choose The Leaders Of Tomorrow

The Louisiana Leaders of Tomorrow Celebration is designed to honor outstanding youth (under the age of 21), as individuals, or groups who are making a difference in Louisiana through good citizenship, entrepreneurship, leadership and excellence.

Special Olympics Louisiana will honor Louisiana’s youth at the 3rd Annual Leaders of Tomorrow event.  On May 4th nominations will be open.  Nominations should be cast for youth (under the age of 21), who are “Leading by Example” in Louisiana, while promoting good citizenship, entrepreneurship, leadership and excellence. Those being nominated can be with or without intellectual disabilities and anyone is eligible to nominate.

Awards will be given in ten categories:

•   First Lady’s Gold Medal
Awarded to an individual, group of individuals, or organization for outstanding achievement benefiting the citizens of Louisiana (Highest honor/award given at the event)

•   Entrepreneur of the Year
Awarded to an individual or group of individuals who organizes and manages any enterprise in Louisiana with considerable initiative for the purpose of building greatness in Louisiana.

•   Individual Philanthropist of the Year
Awarded to an individual with a record of exceptional generosity, raising money and contributing to a charity, while also encouraging others to take philanthropic leadership roles in his/her community.

•   Group Philanthropist of the Year
Awarded to a private, charitable, non-profit, or religious organization headquartered in Louisiana or with substantial operations or physical presence in Louisiana in which the efforts are to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations.

•   Youth Male of the Year  
Awarded to a male private citizen of Louisiana for outstanding achievement or for extraordinary accomplishment or heroism during the preceding year.

•   Youth Female of the Year
Awarded to a female private citizen of Louisiana for outstanding achievement or for extraordinary accomplishment or heroism during the preceding year.

•   The Triumph Award
Awarded to an individual from Louisiana who has significant success or noteworthy achievement in an instance or occasion of victory.  An individual with an “overcoming the odds” story.

•   Youth Individual Inventor of the Year
Awarded to an individual or group who devises a new process, appliance, machine etc. that is revolutionary for the state of Louisiana.

•   Organization of the Year
Awarded to an organization with an outstanding record of sustained achievement in financial contributions to charities.

•   Louisiana Cultural Ambassador of the Year
Awarded to a Louisiana citizen or native of Louisiana who best exemplifies the “Spirit of Louisiana” on the world stage in the fields of music, the arts, literature, culinary arts, or other cultural pursuits.

To nominate someone please log onto www.laso.org and select Leaders of Tomorrow on the bottom left.  Nominations can be done online or downloaded as an attachment.  The deadline to submit nominations is October 1, 2010.

Selection committees around the state will review the nominees and the winners will be notified.  The award winners will be recognized at the Louisiana Leaders of Tomorrow Celebration luncheon on November 5, 2010 in Baton Rouge, LA. Special Olympics Louisiana is the beneficiary of the event and several local Special Olympics Louisiana athletes will be in attendance. Special Olympics Louisiana (SOLA) is a state-wide organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities. SOLA offers year-round programs for 13,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in all 64 parishes with the help of 12,000 volunteers. We have health, education, leadership, family, training and sports programs for people beginning at age 2 and there is no upper age limit. There is no cost to participate in Special Olympics.
