Long term care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and homecare nurses looking for a way to control costs, save nursing time, and improve patient care now have a new option when it comes to saline for wound care. Saljet is a convenient, easy-to-use, unit dose, disposable 30ml vial of sterile saline for wound care that eliminates the need for large saline bottles, needles and greatly reduces the chance of infection.
“Many facilities and hospitals use large bottles of saline for their wound cleansing needs and this leads to many problems,” says Howard Rose, CEO of Winchester Laboratories, maker of Saljet. “Either a large amount of saline is wasted because there is just too much for what is needed to clean the wound, or the bottle is reused which increases the chance of contamination. Another problem with large bottles of saline is you need to use syringes, needles and other ancillary equipment to deliver the saline, which adds cost and time to the procedure. With Saljet, all of these problems are eliminated.”
Each Saljet vial contains 30ml of sterile saline and with a quick twist of the top the vial is opened and then a nurse can squeeze the vial to deliver a steady stream of sterile saline at the correct pressure to cleanse the wound. When finished, the nurse simply disposes of the Saljet vial. Saljet eliminates the chance of contamination from reusing a previously opened container of saline and the cost of sharps disposal.
“There are other advantages offered by Saljet in a Long Term Care, homecare or skilled nursing setting. The nurse, or the patient, can easily warm the saline in the Saljet vial simply by holding it in their hand for a minute or two, avoiding the problem of cold saline on a wound,” says Rose. “Additionally, nurses can easily place a few Saljet vials in their scrubs pocket and carry Saljet on their rounds. Finally Saljet is less expensive than any other procedure when using saline in caring for a healing wound.”
