May 2, 2010 - PRLog -- Energy and Climate Change Minister, Lord Hunt, has today welcomed the massive take up of the Government’s boiler scrappage scheme, with all the vouchers available having now been allocated to householders across England. The scheme is now closed to new applications.

People have up to 12 weeks after receiving their voucher to have the work done and claim the £400 off the cost of installation of a new, modern “A-rated” boiler or a renewable heating system like a biomass boiler or a heat pump.

The Government’s boiler scrappage scheme was launched in January 2010 with funding of £50m to upgrade up to 125,000 household heating systems in England to cut carbon, save money on fuel bills and sustain work for the heating industry.

Lord Hunt, Energy and Climate Change Minister, said:

“The scheme’s been a great success and is already helping people cut down on their fuel bills. An ‘A-rated’ energy efficient boiler can help save around £200 a year off fuel bills and reduce emissions.

“The scheme has also provided a much needed boost to England’s plumbers and boiler manufacturers, helping to sustain work for the 130,000 installers and up to 25 UK-based boiler manufacturers throughout the economic recovery.

“As a result of the scrappage scheme, we’ve seen other companies backing the scheme and giving their own discounts as well.”

Some energy suppliers will continue to run their own promotional schemes. Over the past two months, all the major energy companies which sell and install boilers (British Gas, E.On, npower and Scottish & Southern) have matched the Government’s offer, giving householders potentially a total of £800 off the cost of a new efficient boiler and some boiler manufacturers are also offering deals.

Recently published figures showed that, as at 16th March, 118,785 vouchers had been allocated and 35,390 boilers had been installed. This data will be updated on a monthly basis on the Energy Saving Trust website. The full allocation of 125,000 vouchers has now been reached.

Fraser Winterbottom, Chief Operating Officer for the Energy Saving Trust, said:

“This scheme has really caught the public imagination, causing huge daily demand on the Energy Saving Trust for advice, and incentivising tens of thousands to move from the worst to the best performing boilers saving on CO2 emissions and their energy bills.

“For those who have received their vouchers but haven’t yet gone ahead with installation they have 12 weeks from the day of issue to claim their £400. We hope that the industry will continue to offer incentives for households to upgrade their boilers, as there are still many of the worst performing boilers out there. People can save up to £235 per year by replacing their old boiler with a new energy efficient model, as well as doing their bit for the environment.”
