By: Matt Gorham San Diego Boca FC Head Coach, Papo Santos said, “Tonight was a good victory, although in all honesty we only played will in the second half, which is where we won the game. I thought we came out flat, and I told the guys at half time if they don’t get their heads in the game, they might as well go home, and they responded well. Now we must prepare for three games on the road against teams within the division, which are must win games to remain a playoff contender.” The first half was well matched, with both teams being able to easily break through the opposing defenses and creating early scoring opportunities. Southern Oregon Fuego struck first, as forward Brian Avila knocked home the first goal in the 20th minute, giving the Fuego a 1-0 lead. It didn’t take long for San Diego Boca FC to answer back. In the 25th minute, forward Amir Vafaee ran onto a well-struck ball to beat out two Fuego defenders. Vafaee’s shot deflected off of the oncoming goalkeeper then into a recovering Fuego defender and straight into the open net, knotting the game at 1. San Diego Boca FC had multiple chances to take the lead in the first half, but were unable to convert their attacks into goals. The second half went much better for the home team, as they came out of the break playing noticeably sharper. San Diego Boca FC took a 2-1 lead only three minutes into the second half thanks to David Ramirez’s strong finish inside the box. San Diego Boca FC dominated possession in the second half, making the Fuego attack seem almost nonexistent. Boca FC moved the ball well, made strong tackles, and physically outperformed their opponents. Midfielder Alvaro Baez extended the San Diego Boca FC lead to 3-1 in the 60th minute with an impressive scoring strike from 25 yards out. Boca FC put together another great run in the 82nd minute, but had a goal called back because of a disputable offsides call. San Diego Boca FC threatened for almost the entire 20 minutes, with the Fuego defense only able to clear the ball past midfield a handful of times. Each time the Boca FC attack was turned away, the midfielders and defenders, highlighted by defenders Justin Picou and Michael Grba, did a great job of being first to the ball, and winning headers to keep the momentum going forward. Goalkeeper Steve Gonzalez had another strong showing for San Diego Boca FC, making 6 saves and showing his athletic ability, fully extending to make a tough stop on a far post shot late in the game. With the victory, San Diego Boca FC claims three points to move into a three-way tie for second place with Sacramento Gold (2-1-0) and the Bay Area Ambassadors (2-2-0). San Diego Boca FC will be on the road for their upcoming matches, as they travel to Sonoma County to take on the Sol (0-1-1) for their next match May 9, before heading to Sacramento for their game on May 16. San Diego Boca FC will return home to face the Bay Area Ambassadors Saturday, June 5 at Helix High Soccer Stadium at 7:00pm.
