Online Poll Shows Narrow Support for Obama Energy Policy

Support for President Obama's energy policies remains favorable, but only by a 5% margin.

May 1, 2010 - PRLog -- With the Obama Administration's decision to open up additional offshore acreages to oil and gas exploration now on hold in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster, an online survey indicates narrow support for the President's overall energy policy.

When asked "Do you agree with the overall direction of the Obama Administration's energy policy?" 45.7 percent of respondents indicated "yes," while 40.3 percent  replied "no."  14 percent were "unsure."  The informal, non-scientific poll was conducted during the month of April of readers of EV World.com.   A previous poll, taken in March 2010, showed strong opposition to the administration's decision to provide $8.3 billion in loan guarantees for the construction of two new nuclear power plants with exactly 50 percent against and 43.4 per cent in favor.  6.6 percent were uncertain.

"While the March poll indicates many of our readers aren't in favor of the expansion of nuclear power in America, the April survey shows they still support the President's policies, in general, though by a narrow margin," said Bill Moore, the publisher of EV World.com.

"My sense is our readers would prefer to see less emphasis on fossil fuel technologies like 'clean coal', and more focus on renewable forms of energy.  The division of opinion on nuclear power seems to reflect the general attitude of most Americans.  We like the idea of it having a small carbon footprint and its ability to produce electric power around the clock, but we're concerned about its costs, safety, and waste disposal.  As the fire and sinking of Deepwater Horizon indicates, regardless of how advanced the technology, there is always the risk of an accident, one that can impact millions of lives."

Launched in 1998, EV World covers the spectrum of electric vehicle technology from a global perspective, focusing not only on the technology, but also the people and policies that shape the emerging electric mobility industry from e-bikes and e-cars, to e-boats and e-planes.  In 2009, the New York Times selected EV World as one of the 'Top Ten No-Hybrid Hype" websites on the Internet.  Within the electric vehicle industry, it is regarded as the most widely read and respected publication of its type.
