“Madison Handbags is a company that allows comsumers to become designers!,”
Madison Handbags was started in 2003 by Trish Rost in the basement of her home. It took her nearly two years to finalize the designs for the first 14 bags in the collection. The first handbags were cut by hand in Rost’s basement and sewed by a small network of home-based seamstresses. At first, when Rost was working on her own, she sold 20 bags a month. Now, she estimates the company sells some 3,000-5,000 bags monthly. In 2009, Madison Handbags expanded to a production facility in Troy, NY to accommodate the growing demand.
Madison Handbags sells their designer purses through independent consultants at home-based parties. Guests at the parties are given the option of 18 different handbag styles which can be completely customized with over 100 fabric selections. The fabric, hardware, and liner are chosen by the customer, making the bag entirely unique and one-of-a-kind. Each handbag is hand-sewn to the customer’s specifications in New York, and includes a hand-signed card by the seamstress who manufactured the handbag from beginning to end.
