April 30, 2010 - PRLog -- DAYTON -- The winter has been a rugged one and, now that it’s Spring, it’s time to get out and enjoy the good weather with our loved ones.  To help families do just that, the Dayton Christian Center (DXC) is holding a Family Fun Day on Friday, May 15.

“DXC is very strongly family oriented,” said event coordinator Betsy Fox.  “We wanted to have a community event that was focused on that.  We wanted to make the day a fun day with events and activities geared toward children and families participating together, but we also wanted it to be an event where people could learn about a healthier, safer lifestyle.  But, at the same time, we didn’t want to make it all business either.”

Hosted by the Dayton Leadership Academy, there will be classes given by such authorities as the Dayton Fire Department, American Red Cross of Dayton, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and several other area agencies.  Classes will range from eating healthier meals and creating a safer home environment to general wellness.

“McGruff the Crime Dog is going to be here to visit with kids and parents, and we’re going to have a lot of organizations with information tables set up and volunteers there to answer questions and share information on how to live a healthier lifestyle,” Fox said.

But she emphasized that there will be a number of fun activities that kids and parents can enjoy throughout the day.  In addition,  there will be free giveaways through a raffle drawing throughout the day, according to Fox.

“We’ve had such great response from the community and various partners with this project,” she said.  “So many different places have wanted to get involved to make this a great day for everyone.”

Among the prizes will be two tickets to a Dayton Dragon’s game, two free tickets to Kings Island, a gift basket from Trader Joe’s Market, free sandwish coupons from Subway, coupons for free pizza from Cassano's, and several other items.   Also, free bicycle helmets will be given away to children under 12 on a first come, first served basis while the supply lasts.

“We were looking for a way to become more involved in the community at large -- not just the city of Dayton, but the entire Miami Valley -- and we wanted it to be family oriented and fun,” DXC Associate Executive Director Sarah Williams said.  “Our mission statement is “Enriching and Empowering Lives, One Choice at a Time” and we wanted to bring that mission to the community.  I think this is a wonderful way to do that; bringing families together to have an enjoyable day out while also offering them a chance to learn about being healthier and safer.”

The event has been chosen as the Americorps Week project for the loca chapter of the national service agency, according to Judy Pierce, Americorps coordinator at United Health Soluntions, the administrative company for the organization.  Pierce said Americorps is partnering with DXC to heighten awareness of Americorps and its community service.  As such, the shapter is offering area dignitaries and celebrities the chance to become honorary Americorps members for a day.

“This is an exciting partnership,” DXC Associate Executive Director Sarah Williams commented.  “Americorps is a very important national service organization, and we are very proud that we have been selected to be their project for the Americorps Day of Service this year.  I think it will greatly benefit both organizations.”

As such, Pierce believes it will allow the Miami Valley residents a chance to know more about national service and volunteerism.

“We are very proud of our volunteers and our partner organizations and we like to participate with them when we can,” Pierce said.  “When we got involved in the Family Fun Day, it was just the right thing to do to make it our Day of Service project.”

Williams agreed, saying that Americorps is a vitally important element to nonprofit organizations.

“Without Americorps, many community organizations, especially the smaller and newer ones, would not be able to afford the skilled, experienced people they need to bring their services to the people who need it most,” she said.  “The work the Americorps members do is immeasurable.”
She also recognized the role of other groups in this event.

“I really want to express my appreciation to the Dayton Leadership Academy for hosting the event -- without them, it simply wouldn’t have been possible,” Williams said.  “But along with that, I want to thank all of our participating groups -- the Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department, Children’s Medical Center, and everyone else that is helping out.”

Family Fun Day will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dayton Leaderhsip Academy, 1416 W. Riverview Ave., Dayton, OH.
