SMALL HANDS BIG ART AND CRISS CROSS MANGOSAUCE TO HOST MAY 1st  OPEN HOUSE
“Celebrating Spring with Latin Flavor and  Día de los Niños (Day of the Children)”

Charlotte, NC – April 18, 2010

Small Hands Big Art, a South Charlotte children's art studio and Criss Cross Mangosauce, a local company offering  bilingual (English/Spanish) programs for children throughout the state, invite the Charlotte community to a special Open House on Saturday, May 1st, from 1:30 – 5:00pm in celebration of Spring and Día de los Niños (Day of the Children) - a special day to honor and celebrate all children who represent the hopes and dreams of every community!  The event will take place at the Small Hands Big Art studio located at 8025 Ardrey Kell Rd., at The Fountains shopping center in South Charlotte.

The afternoon will feature original and interactive children's musical performances and storytelling from the local talented bi-cultural duo Criss Cross Mangosauce, arts and crafts, and Latin-inspired culinary tastes from Switchin' Kitchens!   The event is a prelude to a cultural Summer Camp that Small Hands Big Art and Criss Cross Mangosauce are teaming up to host at the Small Hands Big Art studio the week of June 28 – July 1.

Criss Cross Mangosauce is a “must-see treat” for children, families and educators interested in the Spanish language and the Latino culture. Their interactive performances inspire children to move and sing in both English and Spanish, using a combination of traditional Latin rhythms and classic American children rhymes.

El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), known as Día, is a celebration of children, families, and reading that culminates every year on April 30. It emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Día is an enhancement of Children's Day, which began in 1925. Children's Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children.  In 1996, acclaimed children's book author and New Mexico native Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of children with literacy to found Día.

“We're excited to host this Open House in collaboration with Criss Cross Mangosauce as a fun and unique way for local children and families to learn about Día de los Niños and the Latin culture and language through music, storytelling, Latin-inspired food, and arts & crafts,” said Jennifer Bryant, owner of Small Hands Big Art.  “The mission of Criss Cross Mangosauce is to bridge cultural differences through the arts, and this event is a great way to honor our mission as we are inviting Latino and non-Latino children and families to come together and join us for this celebration. We are thrilled to collaborate with Small Hands Big Art to bring this exciting event to the Charlotte community,” said Ana Lucia Divins, Co-Founder of Criss Cross Mangosauce.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information about Small Hands Big Art, visit http://www.smallhandsbigart.com, and for information about Criss Cross Mangosauce visit http://www.ccmangosauce.com.
