Oak Forest, Ill., April 29, 2010 - More than half of people in the United States who are over 50 years old will have surviving parents by this year, 2010. This is unprecedented in the history of demographics, and presents a unique challenge for people caring for both their growing children, and their elderly parents. It’s called the “Sandwich Generation,”
Barbara A. O’Brien, president of Live Right Senior Care of Oak Forest has some tips for people who find themselves with three jobs – employee, parent, and caregiver.
• Talk about your issues. Too many people take on the stress of eldercare without help.
There are community groups, support networks, and other resources available. Call your
local health unit or hospital resource center for more information.
• Involve as many family members as possible. If you have brothers and sisters, make
sure they are actively involved in the care of your parents. Perhaps, even older
grandchildren can help out with visits and errands.
• Work with your employer. Your boss has a vested interest in making sure you can
perform at your highest level. This may mean working out a flexible schedule or
arranging different days off. Let your employer know about your unique circumstances
and ask them for any community resources or employee assistance programs.
• Consider respite care. Working full-time, raising a family, and caring for your parents can
be exhausting – physically and emotionally.
According to O’Brien, there are companies that provide respite care at reasonable rates. She adds, “More often than not, cost is a factor for many families, but should never be a deterrent. Most home care providers accept long term care insurance for payment.”
The care provided will be tailored to your loved one’s needs and will provide the primary caregiver with rest…and peace of mind. O’Brien says, “There is no need to go it alone.” The right respite care agency will provide the most customizable, reliable, worry free, in- home service available.”
