April 29, 2010 - PRLog -- (April 28, 2010) – San Diegans are collecting nonperishable food items through the month of May to give to the county’s hungry. After collecting a planned 30 semi-truck loads of food, on May 22 volunteers will participate in the county’s largest-ever food distribution day.  An estimated 4,500 families will receive a hot meal and enough food for an entire week.  The event, called “Not On This Day!” to mean that at least some San Diegans will not go hungry on May 22, is hosted by San Diego CityFest with Luis Palau and is a CityFest Season of Service event.

480,000 San Diegans do not know when or where they will get their next meal. Of those individuals, 181,000 are children.  Not On This Day! is a one-time solution that drives long-term change in the lives of these individuals.  Food collection is occurring at more than 50 business and church locations and is set to surpass the county’s largest-ever donation of 29 semi-truck loads of food.

Food distribution will occur at “block parties” in Spring Valley, San Diego, and El Cajon.  The events will feature live music, bounce houses for kids, a hot meal, and a take-home box with enough food for an entire week.  On the CityFest Season of Service Hunger Board are partners San Diego Food Bank, Feeding America, and The Treasure Box, all of which will provide food to distribute on location.  Centered on serving the community, the events will offer a fun atmosphere for the whole family.

Spearheading the Season of Service Hunger Board is CityFest Season of Service Director Sam Williams along with Metro CEO John Hughes.  Not On This Day! is a part of the five-month CityFest Season of Service that culminates with a massive, area-wide two-day festival in September.  It is one of five “high impact” events that focus on the areas of hunger, homelessness, mentoring, the military, and schools.  The Season of Service kicked off on April 24 with Sleepless San Diego.

Food with be distributed at Bayview Baptist Church at 6134 Benson Avenue, San Diego, CA 92114; New Seasons Church at 2300 Bancroft Drive,  Spring Valley, CA 91977; and at East County Transitional Living Center at 1527 E. Main Street, El Cajon, CA 92021.
