Follow on Google News | Drop Off Cell Phones at the Detroit Windsor Tunnel and Help Soldiers Call HomeTunnel extends successful program indefinitely for travelers to donate phones, MP3s and iPods
By: Detroit Winsor Tunnel “Cell Phones for Soldiers has already provided more than 60,000,000 minutes of free calling cards to soldiers so they can call home free of charge,” states Neal Belitsky, President. “By providing a fast, drop-off station at the Tunnel, we hope to make it easy for the local community to donate to this worthy cause. This program is already operating at all of the American Roads’ toll facilities.” To donate used cell phones, MP3 players and iPods, travelers simply need to: 1. Deactivate the phone or player(s), and turn off the power. 2. Keep the battery attached to the phone. If the battery is not attached, place tape over the battery area. 3. Drop the items off at the Tunnel office. Founded in 2004 by teenagers Brittany and Robbie Bergquist of Norwell MA, Cell Phones for Soldiers is a registered 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Under the program, cell phones are recycled for cash, and the proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for our soldiers serving in the Middle East. Their goal is to provide every U.S. soldier with a way to call home for free. “There are more than 130 million phones retired every year in the United States,” states Robbie Bergquist, co-founder of Cell Phones for Soldiers. “If just 2% of all American’s were to donate their phones, we could supply every troop with a phone as a small measure of the gratitude of a nation.” In addition to collection at all American Roads bridges, Cell Phones for Soldiers collections are starting to appear at other US toll facilities.
