Follow on Google News | Charity football match for Walsall HospiceAn annual charity football match is being held in a small South Staffordshire village to raise money for Walsall Hospice.
By: Jayne Howarth, freelance journalist/copywrit The Chris Edwards Memorial Match kick off will see Great Wyrley Old Boys take on Wolves All Stars on Saturday, May 22, at Great Wyrley FC, Hazel Lane, Great Wyrley at 3pm. It is the fourth charity game since 2007 and the event has raised more than £6,000 for the hospice and other local charities. Father of two Chris Edwards died in December 2006 aged just 38 and his family have held a memorial game to help raise cash for charity. His brother Gareth, said Chris, who served 21 years in the RAF, was cared for at Sue Ryder in Leckhampton, Cheltenham. “Having witnessed the care first hand that my brother received in the Sue Ryder hospice, I know how important it is that Walsall gets its own hospice. My family and I will be eternally grateful for the treatment that Chris received but we are really keen to see a facility like this in Walsall,” he said. “This is why we want to raise as much as we can for Walsall Hospice because we know how important it is to have that kind of care when you are terminally ill.” Gareth from Great Wyrley is hoping as many people as possible attend the match. Entry and programme costs £3 per Adult and £1 per child, but any child wearing a Walsall FC shirt will get in for free. There will also be a evening Disco and Charity Auction at 7pm, tickets are £5.00 and are available on the door.
