April 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Cervical Disc herniation commonly affects the 30-to 50 year age group. The herniation may involve either cervical disc 5 and 6 (most common) or 4 and 5 or 6 and 7. The symptoms of cervical disc herniation depend on the location of the herniation. The common symptoms are pain in the arm, weakness of the muscles, difficulty in picking up the things, numbness, tingling and dizziness.
The treatment of the cervical herniated disc can be divided into
a.   Medical intervention
b.   Surgical intervention
The Medical Intervention
This approach involves prescribing medicines and exercises to relive the pain and associated symptoms. The commonly prescribed medicines are the NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or Cox-2 inhibitors.  In case of severe pain steroids may be prescribed but for short duration.  The physician may also advice exercises that should be performed in order to provide relief. The pain and symptoms subside in 6 to 12 weeks and once the pain and associated symptoms subside by medicine and excecises, they usually do not re-appear.
Surgical Intervention
The surgical intervention is indicated in case of pain lasting for more than 6-12 weeks or severe pain/disability. The success rate of the treatment ranges from 95-98%. Various surgical approaches are used for treatment depending on the expertise of the surgeon and condition of the disc herniation. Common techniques being
a.   Anterior discectomy without spine fusion
b.   Posterior cervical discectomy

The surgical intervention may lead to complications such as
a.   Injury to the esophagus
b.   Horaseness (Due to damage to the nerves)
c.   Infection
The surgery is usually a day care surgery, where the patient can get discharged the same day or after 24 hours stay. But after discharge patient has to wear brace for a prescribed time and has to control activities.
India offers a great advantage to the patients suffering from cervical disc herniation. Indian hospitals perform such surgeries with great precision and results at par or better than the western facilities. The results are due to the state of the art technology equipment and highly experienced medical professionals. Many of the professionals have been trained in US and other western facilities and thus are well versed with latest development in the field of herniation treatment.  The cost of treatment makes the travel to India for treatment worthwhile. The cervical disc herniation surgery in India may be 1/5th to 1/10th the cost in US thus acting as a huge saving potential for medical tourist.
