April 28, 2010 - PRLog -- Iona College presented its first Undergraduate Research Day, Friday, April 16 at Spellman Hall at the New Rochelle campus. The all-day program provided over 80 students with the opportunity to highlight their research accomplishments and share their work with other students.

Brian J. Nickerson, PhD, Dean of Iona College’s School of Arts and Science, said that Undergraduate Research Day is an extension of a program that has been in effect for the past few years whereby most majors require substantive independent research as part of the degree requirement. “We wanted to provide a forum similar to an academic conference that would encourage the students to voluntarily present their research to the faculty and their colleagues.”

The program comprised oral presentations, round table discussions and poster presentations highlighting the students’ research projects. Most of the students are seniors but there was also a strong representation from juniors and sophomores as well. Research topics ranged from advances in the education of students with autism and techniques to being an effective healthcare communicator, to mapping the atmosphere of the planet Mars and investigating the onset of multiple sclerosis.

With the recent increase in number of students involved in research on the Iona campus, Undergraduate Research Day has been established and will become a landmark annual event in the School of Arts and Sciences.
