Theresa Yon, candidate for the North Carolina House in District 59, has announced support for lifting the Charter School cap established by the North Carolina Legislature.
Charter Schools are public schools that operate outside many of the local school district’s rules. Freedom from both these restrictions and from collective-bargaining agreements with unions allows charter schools to experiment with new curricula and educational practices. Charter Schools are funded with taxpayer dollars on a per-student basis. Unlike many traditional public schools which enroll students strictly on the basis of zones in which they reside, students apply to attend charter schools. Successful students are therefore a necessity for a Charter School to remain solvent.
“I believe the arbitrary cap of 100 Charter Schools has cost North Carolina in several ways. First, studies have proven that Charter schools can significantly improve the performance of students,” says Theresa Yon. “Charter Schools also allow parents more choices in their children’s education, and they can provide alternatives to public schools which fail to meet minimum standards.”
“Additionally,”
The former college professor believes charter schools are an integral part of improving education for all of North Carolina’s children and preparing them for the rigors of college level academics as well as the competitive job market.
