The continuing upward momentum of the global wind energy sector recently received another positive boost when Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas announced that it had signed its largest ever deal to provide the Portuguese wind energy company EDP Renováveis with a minimum of 1,5000 MW of turbines, CIG has learned.
The new deal, which includes an option for the Portuguese firm to order a further 600 MW of turbines, pushed Vestas’ share price up by more than 11% on the day of the announcement as analysts suggested that the agreement may be worth in the region of $1.34 billion dollars.
Vestas declined to disclose the exact financial terms of the agreement but in a statement available to CIG said that the turbines would be destined for projects across Europe, North America and South America between now and the end of 2012.
The Danish firm went on to say that the so-called Master Supply Agreement also included a two year service and maintenance plan which was also extendable to either five or ten years with subsequent technical support for an additional period.
Currently rated as the third largest generator of wind energy globally EDP Renováveis, the renewable energy arm of the Portuguese energy giant already boasts 6,277 MW of installed capacity, CIG was informed, and has a further 30, 310 MW of projects in its development pipeline.
