Cross jewelry has been worn by adherents of the faith since the early days of Christianity. The cross or crucifix is the most widely recognized religious symbol of the religion and it represents one of the most significant events in the Bible: the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth.

As for the Olive Wood Carving, the art form began around the 4th century CE under Byzantine rule in Bethlehem and following the construction of the Church of the Nativity. It was in this same century that in Europe was introduced to the world the Nicene Creed, in which was described the theology of the Holy Trinity – until this day adhered to and uncontested by the various religious schools in Christendom.

Originally Greek Orthodox monks taught the local residents of Bethlehem how to carve olive wood. The work involves a skillful and detailed chiseling of Olive wood and is considered a major source of income for the Christian residents of Bethlehem and the surrounding area. This is appropriate, as Jesus himself was born in the town, hence the founding of the Church of the Nativity, where it is said that the Virgin Mary conceived the Christ child by divine providence.

The process of producing an Olive wood craft requires quite intense labor and consists of several different stages, and often involving the work of multiple artisans. Drilling machines are used initially to attain the rough outline of the intended craft. Although it eliminates some of the most difficult and time-consuming aspects of the carving, it actually accounts for just 15% of the process.

The piece is then passed onto a skilled artisan who transforms the rough outline into a finished product by chiseling out the details. Lastly, the finished item must be sanded down and polished, and then coated with olive wax to give the object a "natural shine" and ensure its longevity. Depending on what the particular product is, the process could take up to 45 days. Most professional artisans need to go through six to seven years of training.

It is said that Olive wood is used because it is easier to carve than other kinds of woods and could be done accurately with simple hand tools. It has a diverse variety of natural color and tonal depth, due to the annual structure; plus it is resistant to decay and receptive to a number of surfacing treatments.
