Thompson Scores Third Place Finish in RMCS Debut

April 25, 2010 - PRLog -- Brett Thompson of Jerome, Idaho has done a lot of racing and experienced a lot of racing success along the way outside his home state of Idaho. This season, Thompson plans to contest the entire CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series schedule in quest of the point's championship and Saturday night he laid the foundation for a successful season with a third place performance in the opening round of the ten race series.

The RMCS utilizes a format not found in any other Late Model racing series inverting the top qualifiers and awarding the purse payout based on overall point accumulation and performance for each event. Thompson qualified his RTTI Dodge fourth quick meaning he would start the feature event from the 12th starting position.

Thompson took his time early in the race as the tricky one-third mile oval of Magic Valley Speedway ended up being a one-groove track due to the cold temperatures. Moving to the outside early in the race would have been an express lane to the rear of the field.

Thompson moved steadily through the field and by lap five he was running 9th. By lap 12 he was up to 7th and moved into the sixth position on lap 16. He moved into the top five on lap 18 and into fourth on lap 20 where he ran for the next 12 laps.

On lap 32 he made an outside pass around lapped car and moved into the third position where he would run the rest of the event glued to the tail of Thane Alderman's bumper.

As the top three exited turn four on the last lap heading to the finish, Thompson dove low trying take the second spot but came up a few feet short. "I am really happy about the finish," Thompson said. "Will Harris and the entire crew (Scott Gilligan, Cody Mingo, Craig Nemus, Shane Humphries, and Rich Thompson) did an awesome job all day. The car was fast in practice and after the incident in the heat race the guys put the car back exactly where it was and I could not be happier about the finish."

Racing at Magic Valley Speedway can be a challenge depending on the weather. "Normally there is a second groove but with the cold weather and no syrup on the second groove the track was pretty much a single groove track," Thompson said. "I really needed Thane (Alderman) and Bruce (Quale) to make a mistake and those guys rarely do so to finish third is a good night for the team. I like to thank John Lane for tuning on this Kevin Kroyer built engine as it had plenty of horsepower making it a blast to drive."

With race one of the ten race series in the books, Thompson sits fourth in the point standings just nine points out of first heading into round two in two weeks at Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley, Utah. "This is a long season and my goal is to have solid finishes all season and I am looking forward to racing at RMR where we feel we have a great shot to win," Thompson said.
