Throughout the year, Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia conducts free fertility seminars which include information on causes and therapies for “male factor”. Once a major cause limiting a couple’s ability to have their own biological child, modern therapies are all but removing male infertility as a barrier for successful treatment.
The practice is currently participating in a study examining accelerated (SDAD) versus delayed (SDD) sperm decondensation reactions. During fertilization, the sperm must alter its own DNA in order to bind to human egg DNA. Part of this process is a reaction called "decondensation"
Environmental factors seem to contribute to this problem. Fortunately, there are certain therapies that can improve this problem. If patients have had exposure to organic pesticides, textile mill run off environments, mercury, meat treated with steroids or growth hormone, excessive tobacco, munitions or other unhealthy environments, it would be prudent to consider testing.
National Infertility Awareness Week, April 24-May 1, is designed to raise awareness about the disease of infertility which affects 7.3 million Americans. Advanced Fertility is sponsoring a team for this month’s March of Dimes fundraising walk for babies and is contributing well over $1,200 through donations from the practice, staff and patients, and through the sale of special T-Shirts.
“In addition to our ability to treat male factor, we have other exciting developments coming on line to give couples more hope and more options to start and expand their families,” stated Advanced Fertility medical director, Gail Whitman-Elia, MD. “No longer is male factor a significant challenge keeping couples from achieving conception. We encourage couples dealing with infertility to come in and get tested. In many cases, we uncover what’s standing in the way of the couple getting pregnant and taking home a baby.”
Individuals and couples may call the practice at (803) 939-1515 to register for the next free information seminar.
