Poricy Park Conservancy announces May 2010 community programs and events, where there’s something for everyone! Adults, teens, kids and families!!

Little Seeds
Tuesday & Thursday mornings – 9:30 am-11:30 am, May 4th, 6th, 18th, 20th, 25th & 27th  
No sessions May 11th & 13th
Friday afternoons – 12:30 pm-2:30 pm, May 7th, 21st, 28th, June 4th & 11th  
No session May 14th
The young child “why’s” and other nature curiosities are perfect for Poricy Park’s exploring nature Little Seeds program.  You can bring your child ages 3 1/2 through 6 (must have turned 3 by Nov 1, 2009) to our beautiful park and our caring trained instructors will lead them on hikes, tell stories, and engage them in fun crafts and activities. Give your child the healthy gift of fresh air and sunshine while exploring our world! Note: We have morning or afternoon sessions! Class size is limited! Will meet at Albert’s Annex. Paid pre-registration required with signed registration form.
Fee:
•   Three week program, Tuesday AND Thursday: Members - $69 (equivalent to $11.50/session); Non-members - $78 (equivalent to $13.00/session)
•   Five session program, Friday afternoons: Members - $62.50 (equivalent to $12.50/session); Non-members - $70 (equivalent to $14.00/session)

We Are Nature’s Team – W.A.N.T.
Monday afternoons – 3:30 pm-5:15 pm – May 3rd through 24th
Be part of our environmental club and see what we are doing as nature protectors! We’ve already saved the equivalent of many gallons of gasoline! Poricy Park’s experienced and trained instructors will lead nature explorations and instill an appreciation of nature through experiments, and hands-on activities. Team size is limited, so please register early to give your child the healthy benefits that outdoors and nature exploration provides. Appropriate for elementary school children. Meet at the Nature Center
Fee: Paid registration REQUIRED minimum of one week prior to session attending. Our team members have the opportunity to purchase ($10 each) a special W.A.N.T. t-shirt!
•   Individual sessions: Members-$13.50/session; Non-members-$15/session
•   All 4 sessions/1 each week: Members-$48; Non-members-$56

It’s Still Happening!
Tuesday – May 25th 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Join us for some stimulating conversation and relaxing tea in our 1770 New Jersey State Historic Murray Farmhouse parlor! May 25th Theme –History isn’t Just Dead White Guys. Part II: History is full of info about men so join us for a discussion of women in the Revolutionary War era as we share portions of Founding Mothers for discussion.  Special guests from the reenacting group ‘Past Muster’ as well as others will participate! Last session for season. Will start again in the fall. Meet at the Murray Farmhouse (may use gravel road & park at farmhouse) - Must pre-register at least one week prior to session.

Knitting Bee
Tuesdays – May 4th, 18th, June 1st, & 15th  7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
May flowers aren’t the only thing blossoming! Join our blossoming knitting group and see many colors! We will teach everyone from the “never held a knitting needle” person to experienced knitters who would like to knit in the company of other knitters and everyone in-between. From knit and purl to textured patterns, you can learn! All levels of knitters will be advised upon registration as to what they need to bring. Not necessary to commit to all sessions. Must register at least one week prior to each session. Meet at the Nature Center

Weekend In Old Monmouth
Saturday, May 1st 10am-5pm  & Sunday, May 2nd 12pm-5pm  
FREE!  Third Annual Historic Tour – Poricy Park is one of the exciting destinations on this amazing historical tour of over 30 historic Monmouth County sites. Tour information is posted at visitmonmouth.com. (Click on the Departments link on the left and then on the Historical Commission link.) Light infantry drill demo, open hearth cooking and other womanly arts, colonial games, photo opportunity, tours of an authentic 18th century house and barn! Meet at the Murray homestead. Note: If weather & health permit, we encourage you to park in the lot and walk down the hill.

Fly Fishing – New Program!
Sunday, May 16th  2:00pm-3:30pm & Sunday, June 13th  - 2:00pm-3:30pm
A lifelong Fly Fisherman shares expertise gathered over 35 years with participants interested in learning more about the popular sport of Fly Fishing.  This program is geared to the beginner who is wondering if Fly Fishing is something they would like to pursue, ages 16 and up. Limited to 3-5 participants!! While fly fishing is not encouraged in Poricy Park, our instructor will provide a listing of  recommended appropriate sites in the area.
•   Learn how Fly Fishing Tackle differs from other types of recreational fishing gear
•   Learn why Fly fishing can be as effective as conventional or spinning tackle
•   Display of Flies and an explanation of their uses for different species
•   A look at the art of Fly Tying, briefly discussed
•   Casting demonstration and instruction on several different types of Fly rods, from ultra-light, small trout-stream tackle to heavy salt-water gear designed to battle fish over 50 lbs.
•   If your are interested in gearing up with your first Fly Rod outfit, hear some suggestions to help you get started in Fly Fishing at any budget
Meet at the Nature Center; Registration Deadline – May 12th!

Fossil Hunt
Sunday, May 23rd  3:00pm - 4:30pm
April rain may bring flowers in May. But it also releases many fossils into Poricy Brook!! Our experienced guide will prepare you for your journey back in time 65 million years! We will provide the trowels & sifters and help you identify your treasures! Please dress for the weather and wear rubber boots or old sneakers. Your feet WILL get wet! Note: Sandals and slip-on footwear prohibited. Remember to bring a small container to hold your five best finds! Appropriate for adults and school age children accompanied by an adult. Younger children welcome with adult assistance. Registration is needed so we will have enough supplies!!!  Meet at the Nature Center
Fee: $8 per participant; $32 Family Special (2 adults,  3 children)

Rebecca's Reel Quilters 2010 Quilt Show “Visions and Dreams”
Friday, May 14 and Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Poricy Park, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Admission: $5.00.  Children 8 and under FREE
Vendors, Raffle Quilt, Raffle Baskets, Refreshments
Come see beautiful, handcrafted quilts judged in different categories: Pieced, Art and/or Embellished, Innovative, Appliqué, Group Creations, and Wearables, totes, etc., as well as other awards.


Program Fees
The Poricy Park Conservancy strives to provide quality programs at a reasonable cost to our visitors.  Your generous contributions assist us in sustaining our operation. Unless otherwise noted, recommended program donations are $3 for members and $5 for non-members.  

Pre-Registration is requested for all programs unless noted otherwise, allowing us to plan supplies and instructor coverage accordingly.  Although walk-in registration the day of program is available with some programs, a program will be cancelled if the pre-registration minimums are not met.

PROGRAMS ARE HELD RAIN OR SHINE SO PLEASE DRESS ACCORDINGLY.

The Poricy Park Conservancy is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization located in Middletown Township. With exceptional ecological resources, the 250 acre historical and nature site makes it one of the largest nature preserves in Monmouth County.
