Future Journalists and Illustrators on the Horizon?

Charlotte-area students awarded in national competition for writing and drawing abilities

April 23, 2010 - PRLog -- Several local students were recently recognized for their exceptional writing and drawing talents.  What’s so extraordinary about the win? The students were all under age 10!

The students were recognized as a part of the national PBS Kids Go! Writers contest, a national competition targeted at students in grades K-3. The contest is designed to encourage children to write and illustrate their own stories.  WTVI, Charlotte’s PBS station, hosted the competition locally and presented the following students with awards:  

Kindergarten                  

1st Place: Addie Barrier (age 6)            
Hometown: Hickory, NC               
Story Title: Addie the Snake Goes to the Carnival      

2nd Place: Sophia Smith (age 6)            
Hometown: Charlotte, NC               
Story Title: My Favorite Dogs Too!      

3rd Place: Jacob Gold (age 6 1/2)         
Hometown: Charlotte, NC               
Story Title: The Seahorse Treasure            

1st Grade                  

1st Place: Nothila Selvaraj (age 7)            
Hometown: Charlotte, NC               
Story Title: Ella and Her Three Friends         

2nd Place: Matthew Thomas (age 5)            
Hometown: Salisbury, NC               
Story Title: The Wrong Grade            

3rd Place: Benjamin Blumenthal (age 7)   
Hometown: Salisbury, NC               
Story Title: The Magic Bird         

2nd Grade

1st Place: Page Bernson (age 8)
Hometown: Mint Hill, NC
Story Title: The Race of the Flies

2nd Place: Israella Freidline (age 8)
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
Story Title: My Squirrel Max

3rd Place: Carrie Roth (age 8)   
Hometown: Waxhaw, NC
Story Title: Anna Wants a Puppy

3rd Grade
1st Place: Kennedy Earle (age 8)
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
Story Title: My Backyard Discovery

2nd Place: Nissrine Kerroum (age 9)
Hometown: Charlotte, NC
Story Title: My Kind of School

3rd Place: Caroline Reeves (age 8)
Hometown: Mooresville, NC
Story Title: Lion’s Loose Tooth

“Kids naturally have a keen sense of curiosity and incredible imaginations,” states Dorn-Steele.  The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest provides a safe haven for children to express their feelings and ideas while fostering early literacy skills as storytelling.”

Each first place winner from the local contest will be submitted to PBS KIDS GO! for the National Competition. Local winners in all categories will received DVD’s, activity magazines, journals, certificate of achievement, and an opportunity to appear on WTVI.
