Follow on Google News | Calamity Strikes Norfolk Band's Bid For GlorySharps' drummer's accident scuppers preparations for semi finals of Live & Unsigned 2010
By: Alison Haynes But now the Sharps face an even bigger challenge: with just days to go till the semi final, on May 2 at the Beck Theatre, Hayes, London, drummer Sam Evans has damaged his right arm in a mountain biking accident. Doctors say he won't be able to use it for weeks. "It's a disaster," admits Sharps guitarist Darby Dorras. "We really feel we have a chance. Obviously we're pleased that Sam hasn't hurt himself worse than he did, but we can't help feeling gutted." Despite the setback, the Sharps are determined to go on with their bid for glory. "We have two choices," says Darby. "We can see if Sam can manage to drum one-handed on May 2. It's a possibility but it's not likely. For one thing, he'd have to do it left-handed (and he's right-handed) "The other alternative is to change the line up. That would involve Kieran Morgan, who normally plays guitar, taking over as drummer. Then we'd get a stand-in to take over Kieran's guitar part." The stakes are high so the Sharps have to get the decision right. Some of the biggest names in the industry will be judging the semi final stage of the competition. This years judges include Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale, Urban DJ, Presenter and Radio 1’s Ras Kwame, BBC Introducing’ The Sharps will make their choice just before the semi final on May 2. Meanwhile, Guy Porteous, from Aylsham, has been drafted in as 'the fifth Sharp' and will be playing guitar, should he be needed. He's currently working on the band's playlist with Kieran in Southampton. "Guy is a great musician and he knows our music, but it's a tall order for him," says Darby. "We really appreciate his helping us out. "We also need as much support as we can get at the show on May 2 – if you can get there, please come along!" Chris Grayston, Events Director of Live & Unsigned says: “It's tough for the guys – especially Sam – but the show must go on, so good for them! The competition is all about originality, live ability and credibility and there’s over £75,000 in prizes up for grabs this year."
