PRLog - Apr. 22, 2010 - SURREY, U.K. -- British Holidaymakers Stranded in North Cyprus

After the eruption of the Icelandic Eyjafjallajokull volcano, air travel throughout Europe has come to a standstill. Over 150,000 Brits have been affected throughout Europe caused by the volcanic eruptions, and the ash smoke that has resulted from this. There have been 95,000 flight cancellations at an estimated £1.1 billion cost to the tourism industry.

The chaos of stranded holidaymakers also rippled over to many European countries including North Cyprus. Many passengers who travelled to North Cyprus found themselves stranded in the resorts of Kyrenia and Famagusta. With the Eid period of "23 April" approaching many found themselves threatened by nowhere to stay at all. Tour operators were left with the task of looking after their clients while abroad.

Direct Traveller, who is the UKs leading tour operator to North Cyprus had over 180 passengers who could not return back home as scheduled to the UK. Also over 150 passengers that were due to have their holiday could not travel into any Cyprus airports including Ercan and Larnaca.

As the event unravelled Direct Traveller showed its dedication to its customers and paid for all accommodation needs for them. A multi team operation effort both in the UK and North Cyprus meant that clients were swiftly moved to a central hub hotel where they were accommodated on a complimentary basis at the Ship Inn hotel in Kyrenia.

Managing Director Ramadan Ozdemir says: "Direct Traveller took the decision to put its customer peace of mind first. We offered accommodation for all clients to a central hotel where we could manage the task of repatriating our them safely back to the UK. As the only tour operator to offer free accommodation in time of need to its clients, the Direct Traveller team succeeded to minimise the overwhelming potential of distress to our clients".

Clients were then on a systematic basis advised of their rescheduled return flights back to the UK, and transferred to their new flights. Most passengers that flew to Ercan and Larnaca are leaving to the UK by the end of the week, and have begun to fly safely back home. Although airports have opened, due to a huge backlog some airline such as EasyJet low cost carriers cannot offer alternative flights to clients until May. Direct Traveller is doing its utmost to minimise the effect of such flight formalities to travellers.

A full recovery from the airport closures is expected to be resolved by the first week of May 2010.

Direct Traveller was established as a specialist tour operator to North Cyprus since 2003. Since then has become the strongest growing tour operator to North Cyprus for 6 consecutive years. Firmly established as the leading tour operator to North Cyprus for many years bringing over 11,000 package holiday passengers to North Cyprus - Direct Traveller offers holidays in Kyrenia and Famagusta from 20 UK airports.
