April 23, 2010 - PRLog -- Steps are being taken by Dorset-based thin client solutions and IT training provider Deverill, to offer a range of ‘Green’ solutions for businesses following a recommendation adopted by the European Commission which wants to see IT companies help firms to reduce their carbon footprint. The recommendation also calls on the IT industry to become 20 per cent more energy efficient by 2015.

This recommendation is not surprising considering that the IT industry is responsible for the same level of CO₂ emissions as the aviation industry, which contributes to two per cent of the world’s emissions. Furthermore, with around 10 million office PC’s and IT equipment in the UK, IT accounts for approximately 10 per cent of the nations electricity consumption.

One solution offered by Deverill is a ‘Green Audit Initiative’. The initiative encourages businesses to consider how to use IT in order to save money, reduce overheads, improve business efficiency and help save the environment. After an onsite consultation, Deverill will review a company’s IT and suggest a number of strategies which are designed to be implemented at different stages of a company’s growth. The long-term benefits of this include reducing IT costs and making efficient use of IT systems and infrastructure.

As well as the green audit initiative, Deverill offers an ‘IT systems Healthcheck’, which investigates the dependability of an IT system. With an IT Healthcheck a Deverill engineer will visit a company’s site, analyse the environment to look at the dependability of existing systems. This will help to improve productivity within a business due to more efficient use of systems and will also have a better impact on the environment.

Joel Jervis, Chief Executive Officer, Deverill said: “Businesses need to be aware that there is no one correct way to become greener, there are lots of things that can be done to reduce carbon footprint. There is also a misconception that the only way to become greener is to invest in new technologies but this is not the case. Also, with the relentless rise in energy costs and the impact this has on businesses in today’s tough economic climate it is vital to find ways to reduce energy consumption.

“At Deverill we want to work in partnership with our clients and prospective clients to offer them advice so they can then make informed decisions on how and when to make changes to save money and to become greener.”

Deverill has also taken steps to become greener. For example, Deverill benefits from a virtualised environment, meaning the leading managed services provider has significantly reduced the number of servers in its office by 75 per cent so its systems do not consume as much energy as before.
