April 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Brunel University are using the many features of Texthelp’s Read&Write GOLD award winning assistive software to support students with literacy difficulties and ensure they fulfil their potential.

The original decision to purchase Read&Write GOLD software was suggested by the Disability and Dyslexia Service at Brunel who provide expert advice and support to all disabled students.  A site licence, which ensures Read&Write is available to all students, has been implemented throughout the University.

Alastair Veal, an Assistive Technology Advisor at Brunel University comments “Having a site licence means that disabled students can use the software on all computers and are not restricted to working in one area only.  This not only means students are more comfortable because they don't have to go to a specific area that identifies them as having a disability, it’s also very useful for students who want to use Read&Write GOLD in unusual ways with specialist software.  For example, students can use the screen shot reader in Read&Write GOLD with a software development package or graphics package to proof-read any text they have inputted.  These course specific packages are usually only available in specific labs”.

Read&Write GOLD is Texthelp’s award-winning literacy support software designed to assist students with literacy difficulties.   The software works discreetly with all mainstream Windows applications (including MS Vista), allowing users the opportunity to work in an inclusive manner alongside their colleagues.  Read&Write GOLD improves access to Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) and Digital Exams.

Read&Write GOLD is easy to use and features include: Screen Masking (to tint or mask sections of the window), Texthelp Voices (new text-to-speech voices), a Translator which translates selected words into French, Spanish, German or Italian, enhanced Spelling, Dictionary & Homophone support, and the software echoes back Dragon text.

Alastair continues “Read&Write GOLD is a comprehensive text-to-speech and study skills support program.   Students use many of the features whilst at University.  The text-to-speech function which encompasses dual colour highlighting is used by a large number of students who struggle with reading, as it helps students to focus on the text being read.  This feature also helps students when proof-reading text as they can listen to their work being read back to them and spot any errors.

With more students accessing University materials online and downloading PDF documents the PDF Aloud tool is of huge benefit.  Also students like the MP3 function which allows them to download books/notes in audio format which they can listen to”.
