By: d lessons Music lessons are fun and educational. September is the busiest time of year for music lesson enrollment. Before starting your search you should understand that your child needs available time for regular practice. Practice duration begins with 15 minutes and moves up to 30 minutes per day, in the first year of lessons. If you are interested in piano, or drums, your child should be at least 4 years old, and at least age 6 for guitar, vocal, violin, and flute. A great place to start your search is the Fall Registration section in your newspaper. Here you can first look for the schools location, is it walking distance? Is it a long drive? Since you will be traveling every week, location is important. Also, do you see a familiar school name? Do they list your instrument of choice? They should be friendly when you call. Look for an established music school. (There have been instances where unsuspecting students have written a cheque or paid cash to an instructor they found online, and that instructor never showed up again after the first lesson). When you begin, you may not even know where you musically want to go - but that's ok. Your instructor should be able to help you take steps that help you see the picture of what you want to accomplish. When you are ready to call here are some questions you may want to ask: 1. How much will the lessons cost? 2. Is there a registration fee? If so, how much? 3. How is payment made? 4. Do you offer instrument sales or rentals? 5. What is your missed lesson policy? 6. May I sit in on the lesson? 7. How long is the lesson? (Most are ½ hour, once a week, some Students choose 1 hour). 8. What are your policies for stopping lessons? (It is common for schools to require 2 weeks notice). 9. Does your school prepare piano students for RCM exams? (Most Music Schools do, but some schools use their own curriculum) (The RCM is recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education). 10. Do you offer "just for fun" courses? 11. Does your school offer Recitals, Festivals, or Competitions? schools are actively involved in local, regional, or provincial competitions) 12. What degree's or qualifications do your teachers have? Next, you may want to visit the school and take any literature they may have available, read bulletin boards, and just get a feeling of how comfortable you are with the atmosphere and reception staff. The music teacher you will have should challenge the student to get better while giving insight, and training on the best way to improve. They are there to help the Student achieve higher skill levels and maximize potential while providing constructive feedback that leads to continuous improvement. They will hold the Student accountable for practicing. The teacher should have a positive and upbeat attitude. Following the above advice will help ensure that your music lessons will be fun and educational at the same time!
