Equality The 12 Principles of Equality

Whilst talking about Equality I have talked of my 12 Equality Principles, in response to comments I have had about them I will expand a bit on each one and would be really interested to know your thoughts and ideas on them.

April 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Whilst talking about Equality I have talked of my 12 Equality Principles, in response to comments I have had about them I will expand a bit on each one and would be really interested to know your thoughts and ideas on them,   The equality principles that I work to are as follows.

1 Equality is important to all

This reltes to the fact that Equality is about us.  It is about all aspects of our lives and inequality affects all of us.  We are all part of society and as such we all have rights and responsibilities.  Equality and inequality affects crime rates, stress, work, education and health as well as many other areas.

2 Equality needs

Insight

Intuition

Innovation

As any other healthy subject it needs to be based on these three  I’s.  We need insight and empathy to be able to deal with the issues.  We need our intuition to be able to deal effectively with the insights gained.  We need innovation to be able to keep on making changes and improving our lives.

3 Equality needs a positive brand

Traditionally Equality has been viewed by many in a negative light and its subject matter has been about other people, political correctness and legislation.  For equality to make the changes needed to make a difference combat prejudice and stop discrimination people must engage with it.  For people to engage it has to be attractive and meaningful.

4 Equality message is required ( view, actions and outcomes)

Part of the brand of equality is ensuring that a consistency exists in the message.  This includes the view taken of equality the actions needed and the outcomes aspired too.

5 Equality is strategic and requires a vision

The role of equality in organisations is important and therefore has to be part of the strategy and have a vision that lines up with the organisational vision.  It has to be inspiring and meaningful to people.

6 Equality is a part of achieving success ( not avoiding failure)

Equality or in particular inequality has a direct impact on how we behave and think and therefore how we perform.  We need to put equality at the heart of our intrinsic motivators.

7 Equality ideas have to be applied

The days where equality was enshrined in policy documents only has gone.  Equality and theories that lie behind it need to be put into practice.  Combating prejudice and discrimination requires actions.  It is the job of the equality message to inform us of these actions.

8 Equality is needed for the 21st Century ( must be in sync with current thinking and trends )

The world is changing we have to recognise the inheritance of equality ideas from civil rights activists through to new insights coming social neuroscience.  Equality is part of this and therefore has to take all of these into account.

9 Equality acts as the ethical spine of an organisation

Ethics are important in our personal lives and in organisations.  Doing the right thing can be guided by equality.  This area is never going to consist of all clear cut decisions.  The equality view however can provide valuable assistance in this process.

10 Equality requires commitment and leadership

To achieve the aspirations of equality requires leadership.  Leadership comes in all shapes and sizes but it is needed to show the commitment necessary for equality.

11 Equality is dynamic

Process

Autonomy

Outcome

This show that we have to be able to deal with equality we have to balance each  of  these aspects.

12 Equality is a tool for transparency

For organisations an aspect of their reputation rests on them being able to show they operate fairly and equitably.  Equality is a means of achieving this.

Delivering Equality needs to be able to balance emotional excitement, passion and drive with rational professional discipline. To solve problems requires concentrated effort, combined talents and strong equality leadership.
