Novel, “The House on Black Lake,” Entices Tourists to Taste Treasures of Montreal

Mystics, gypsies, secret societies, underground worlds, decadent rock stars, naughty boutiques and salons, and deadly gorgeous/dangerous men may be the reality of break-out novel by Anastasia Blackwell, but can Montreal measure up to the hype?

April 20, 2010 - PRLog -- As portrayed by American Blackwell, the reality of the French Canadian city may be fact or fiction. The heroine in the novel begins her journey at St. Joseph’s Oratory where the faithful are said to be healed. In fact, the walls of the shrine are covered with canes and crutches of those who have walked down the steep stairs after proclaiming a miraculous healing. The world weary woman featured in the book is transformed in charming Old Montréal, where tourists are pampered in stylish salons, and enjoy the quaint restaurants, hotels and boutiques. The centerpiece of the square is the splendid Notre-Dame Basilique, noted as one of most beautiful cathedrals in the world. The unique Underground, where the heroine is led to a psychic’s chamber within a catacomb of hidden paths, is a city beneath the urban landscape where season changes are non-existent.

Montreal is an island with a mountain, Mont Royal, rising from its center. It is the largest city in the province of Quebec, and the largest French speaking city in North America. Sophisticated and cosmopolitan, its impressive landmarks, galleries, restaurants, and cathedrals are there for all to enjoy - but are the experiences of the novel’s central character available to the common tourist? That depends upon how deeply one wishes to search. There is something for everyone in Montreal, for those who like to play it safe and for those who prefer a darker experience.
