April 19, 2010 - PRLog -- Light Bureau, working closely with Scott Brownrigg Architects have recently provided lighting design consultancy services to the atrium, reception and lobbies for Cardiff’s new flagship waterfront office development 3 Assembly Square. The building has achieved a BREEAM (2006) rating of ‘excellent’.

The six storey (66,250 sq ft) building, is located adjacent to the prestigious National Assembly for Wales’ Senedd building and has a stunning location facing onto Cardiff Bay and is Wales’ largest eco-friendly speculative office development.

The focus of the building is the full height glazed atrium which incorporates a feature staircase and lifts. These have been designed to maximize panoramic views across Cardiff Bay. The atrium houses artwork which the local authority has designated as public art. A sculpture by Claire Morgan entitled “Pressure makes diamonds,” which draws on the area’s coal mining history, is suspended from the ceiling.

Light Bureau’s lighting design solution for the project is understated, achieving the ambient lighting needed with minimum visual impact to the space, allowing the architecture and sculpture to dominate as they should.

Discrete light fittings mounted to the wind posts provide this essential level of lighting.  Feature has been created by integrated lighting to the reception pod above the desk and core and stairs are illuminated by architectural slot details.  The creative lighting design feature is the lift shaft wall, finished architecturally in shuttered concrete into which Light Bureau have detailed random slithers of white light, which subtly follow the passage of the lift up and down the atrium.

3 Assembly Square has a reduced carbon footprint achieving an improvement of 31.3% over building regulations in terms of energy consumption.  Light Bureau’s response has been to use low energy lighting throughout, with controls to ensure that lighting is only used when needed.
