April 18, 2010 – Hayward, Ca – San Diego Boca FC (1-1-0) earned their first win of the 2010 season Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 road victory over the Bay Area Ambassadors (1-2-0) at Gladiator Stadium at Chabot Community College in Hayward, California.

Boca FC Head Coach Papo Santos commented, “This was a great victory after a really good, hard week of training.  The guys were excited to get in the win column, and believing in themselves and their capabilities is what winning is all about.  We will take this win into our next league match and look to continue the winning trend.  I was very happy with today’s victory, considering we were down to 10 men for most of the second half.  The players showed good fight and a desire to win the match.”

San Diego Boca FC opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Alvaro Baez hammered a shot from 30 yards out into the lower right corner beating the Bay Area keeper to take a 1-0 lead on the road. Boca FC’s quick and physical style of play created several more scoring opportunities, but they were unable to convert, allowing the Bay Area Ambassadors to remain within reach.  The first half came to a close with visiting Boca FC holding on to a one goal advantage that could have easily been more.

The Ambassadors came out much stronger in the second half. In the 60th minute, a defensive breakdown on the left side by Boca FC allowed for Bay Area to put together a combination of quick passes, which resulted in an equalizing goal for the home team.  With the score tied at 1-1, things only got worse for San Diego Boca FC when Sergio Villalva was given a red card for a dangerous play in the 65th minute. This controversial booking left Boca FC with the daunting task of playing most of the second half with only 10 men.

San Diego Boca was up for the challenge, however, as the defenders came together to hold steady, and the offense made the best of their chances. Former LA Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Gonzalez had a solid game in the net for Boca FC, making several key stops, and finishing the game with 4 saves. The midfielders, led by Abraham Gomez, were able to overpower the Bay Area defenders on counterattacks to create opportunities. Their patience finally paid off in the 87th minute, when forward Froy Nolasco beat out a Bay Area defender to run onto a through ball and slip it past the oncoming Ambassador goalkeeper to put Boca FC ahead 2-1 in the dying minutes of the game. Nolasco’s late goal would hold up as the difference in the game, allowing Boca FC to return home with their first victory of the early 2010 NPSL season giving them a 1-1-0 record going into a bye weekend.

The NPSL Western Division saw plenty of action this weekend, as all 6 of the teams played in matches. With the away victory, San Diego Boca FC was able to keep pace with division leading Real San Jose (4-0-0) and second place Sacramento Gold (2-1-0), as each earned three points. San Diego Boca FC now sits in third place with 3 points, leading the Bay Area Ambassadors (1-2-0), Southern Oregon Fuego (0-2-0), and Sonoma County Sol (0-1-0).

After having a bye next weekend, San Diego Boca FC will look to build on its win when they face Southern Oregon Fuego (0-2-0) on Saturday, May 1st at 7:00 pm at Helix High Soccer Stadium. The Fuego endured another tough loss over the weekend, this time at the hands of Real San Jose, allowing 8 goals in the match.
