Brooklyn, NY April 9, 2010 - This May Causey Contemporary will present the mixed media paintings of Korean artist Hyun Ju Park in Out of Darkness...Light and Consequential Tea, a group exhibition of tea inspired stoneware.  Consequential Tea will feature the stoneware of Joe Campbell, Dick Lehman, Kristin Muller, Takao Okazaki, and Shane Sellars.   Both exhibitions will open on May 21 and be on view till June 14.  An opening reception will be held at the gallery’s 92 Wythe Avenue location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Friday May 21 from 6 - 9 p.m. The public is invited to attend this event and visit the gallery during hours of Wednesday - Sunday 11 am - 7  pm, Sunday noon - 6 pm, and Monday 9 am - 5 p.m. ??

Out of Darkness...Light is Hyun Ju Park’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery.  Her abstract paintings on panel fully integrate the medium by using distinct materials like, hair and nails with traditional sumi ink and wood creating poetic shapes and textural forms.  Of her work Ms. Park says:
"Making art has always been a psychological necessity for me….My work express tensions and emotions, connected with my past, which have accumulated in my subconscious and conscious mind.  Much of my work with hair and other materials is meant to bring my art into the realm of the natural. I begin with my emotions, then I reconstruct forms as they suggest themselves. I create surfaces that have varied textures indicating undefined space and undulation. Through the visual shifting of form, I want to imbue the surfaces with a spiritual life of their own. Therefore, these forms go through the same growing process as things in nature."

Hyun Ju Park is a mixed media painter, living and working in Seoul, Korea.   Ms. Park holds MFA degrees in Painting from Sook-Myung Women’s University in Seoul and Pratt Institute in New York City.  She has exhibited both nationally and internationally in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., China, Japan and Korea.  In such venues as Ogilvy and Mather Headquarters in NY, Korean Cultural Center in DC and The Yamanashi Prefecture Museum of Art in Japan,  and the Rotunda Gallery in NYC.  Her works have also appeared with Causey Contemporary (formerly Ch’i Contemporary Art) at Fountain NY, Bridge Miami, Bridge London, and the Asia Art Fair in Miami.

Consequential Tea: The ceramic works in this exhibition are as varied as the makers and their backgrounds, and have been made and fired using many different tools and methods. At their heart, all share a sense of place in the centuries old continuum of the ceramic arts, and more importantly, the often quiet and unassuming aesthetic that is so much at the center of Tea.  Each artist brings to this table, his or her own sense of where they belong in this long ceramic history - and - what they have done themselves that goes well beyond the simple mimicry of objects past.  These are, when all is said and done - 21st Century artists making 21st Century art objects.  Each artist has produced Tea Bowls, Tea Vessels, and pieces not for use by Tea, to create the complex and engaging mix found in this exhibition.  Whether directly Tea related, or completely non-functional, it is simple and safe to say that all the pieces in this exhibition have Tea at their core, and shibui in their heart.
