The Art + Architecture Tour provides members and guests access to viewing premier works of art (interior and exterior), at a few select private properties located in Los Angeles. Mr. Rappoport became involved in the landscape renovation project last fall at the request of the estate owner who wanted to enhance the exterior landscape to complement the interior design and art work. The challenge of the renovation included demolition of existing features, transplanting and relocating plant specimens, reconfiguration of new planter beds and installation of new plant materials to compliment and enhance the architecture of the house.
As a professional horticulturist and licensed landscape contractor, Mr. Rappoport was quickly able to discern many failing components to the existing landscape and conceptualize reconfigured planter beds, pathways and hi-lights to enhance the exterior environment.. Using a process he describes as horticultural landscape design, new and exciting specimen trees, shrubs, bulbs, annual and perennial flowering hybrid varieties were selected for the landscape based on plant suitability and cultural requirements for the environmental conditions being planted in. By selecting plants best suited for the location being planted, plant vitality, vigor and establishment is optimized, reducing maintenance problems and expense.
Mr. Rappoport employed a team approach with his very discerning clients. Determining the plant and color palette required several presentations of plants pictured at various nurseries and online websites. Once the palette was approved, Mr. Rappoport personally shopped several wholesale growers and nurseries throughout Southern California to assure premium specimen quality plant material. New tree species as well as perennial flowering shrubs provide an informal, colorful anchor for the hi-light color plantings including 4,700 tulip and iris bulbs and hundreds of individual flowering annual and perennial color plants. Existing pottery and urns throughout the property were replanted and enhanced into ornamental color pots with beautiful and exotic hybrid plants.
