The leaves and branches heated over a fire and applied to the forehead for head aches. The plant has other use as well. An ethno-botanical project in Australia’s northern territories, notes that morning glory leaves are used to treat stings, boils, sores, pains and swelling. When Captain Cook and his team halted in New Zealand, Joseph Bank’s the British naturalist reported that the local Maori people’s health was so good that they had little need for formal medical intervention. New Zealand was isolated for millions of years; at least 80% of its local flora grows no where else on earth. The most spectacular is the Kauri tree. It is part of the pine family, but grows to 24 ft. in diameter, with the lowest branches starting eighty feet up. The tree is full of resin, but collecting the resin kills the tree. The first settlers found that the ground near the tree was full of resin mixed in the soil. It became the first important plant product exported from New Zealand.
