Atlanta’s All Women’s Football Team Kicks off Ninth Season with a Winning Streak

April 15, 2010 - PRLog -- It’s no longer just a boy’s game, the Atlanta Xplosion professional women football team kicks off an exciting ninth season promising to deliver excitement, competitive action and an unforgettable season.  The kick-off season opener was held on April 3rd with a win against the Chattanooga Locomotion.

One of the longest-tenured teams in the National Women’s Football Association, the Atlanta Xplosion are playing their ninth season in the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and boast one of the most diverse and eclectic player rosters in the league.  The players range in age from 18 to 50, while the average age at tryouts is usually in the mid-30s.  They are professionals by day - doctors, lawyers, police officers and most importantly mothers, but 4 nights a week, the juggling of children and career stops as the ladies of the Atlanta Xplosion hit the field, buckle up their chinstraps, and become football players.

The ladies kicked off the season on a winning streak and continued when they played against the Carolina Queens on April 10th.  They will be on their home turf when they play against the Miami Fury on April 24th.  “These are some phenomenal ladies!  Most of them have overcome great obstacles as women and feel proud to step out on the field doing something they love,” says Mashonda Gilmore, General Manager and full-time Senior Project Manager.  Gilmore has been the GM and the IWFL Team Delegate for the past 8 years.  “I am so proud of these women to do what they love in spite of obstacles and stereotypes; I look at them as role models. We put on a competitive, entertaining game, with a plan to win every time – but all in fun!”

Football fans can get their spring and summer football fix throughout the Xplosion’s four-game home schedule including the upcoming game on Saturday, April 24th, then the Houston Energy (May 1st), Carolina Queens (May 15th) and Clarksville Fox (May 29th). Tickets are free for children 6 and under, $7 for children ages 7 through 18, and $10 for regular seating for adults, $12 for VIP seating for adults, group sales are available and discount season ticket packages are also available.  Kick-offs are at 6pm, giving fans an opportunity to enjoy a summer night of food, entertainment, family and football.

The team has compiled a 52-10 record and was the 2006 and 2005 Independent Women's Football League (IWFL) Eastern Conference Champions.
