Follow on Google News | Boston Children's Chorus' annual Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Concert honored with Gabriel AwardA nationally-broadcast live performance by the Boston Children's Chorus is honored with a prestigious Gabriel Award for artistic excellence.
By: Michelle McKenzie Produced in partnership with media partner WCVB-TV and BCC Artistic Director Anthony Trecek-King, the program was broadcast live on WCVB and aired nationally in 80 percent of the country. It was hosted by Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr., and featured BCC with the Young People’s Chorus of New York City honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King through music. The Gabriel Awards were founded in 1965 to “recognize outstanding artistic achievement in a television or radio program or series which entertains and enriches with a true vision of humanity and a true vision of life.” The awards will be presented in New Orleans in June by the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals. The Boston Children’s Chorus is an accomplished children’s singing group with nine choirs and nearly 300 singers ranging in age from 7 to 18 years old. It is a diverse racial, ethnic, religious and socioeconomic collection of youths who work together to create music and in the process break down barriers, build friendships, alliances, self-confidence and hope. The annual Martin Luther King Tribute Concert is BCC’s signature event and the chorus’ way of reinforcing and elevating the social significance of the holiday. “Raising the Roof” was produced by WCVB’s Stella Gould and directed by Dorothy Will. Dave Gardiner served as sound engineer. Elizabeth Cheng is the executive producer. Bill Fine is President and General Manager of the station. About Boston Children’s Chorus The Boston Children’s Chorus harnesses the power and joy of music to unite our city’s diverse communities and inspire social change. Our singers transcend social barriers in a celebration of shared humanity and love of music. Through intensive choral training and high-profile public performance experience (locally, throughout the U.S. and around the world), they learn discipline, develop leadership skills and proudly represent the city of Boston as ambassadors of harmony.
