Integrative Psychiatrist Richard P. Brown Teaches Breath~Body~Mind Stress-Reduction Techniques to Therapists at Ackerman Institute, New York City, April 16, 2010

Richard P. Brown, MD, a psychopharmacologist who integrates CAM (Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) into his treatments, will present a one-day workshop on Friday, April 14, 2010, at The Ackerman Institute for the Family, 149 E. 78th Street, Manhattan, New York, entitled “Breathwork and Meditation for Therapists: Integrate Stress-Reduction Techniques,” for psychotherapists looking to compliment their practices with mind-body techniques rooted in yoga, qigong and meditation.

Coherent Breathing and Open Focus Meditation are two highly effective self-regulation techniques that help relieve anxiety, improve focus and increase one’s feeling of well-being. Coherent Breathing—which involves rhythmic breathing that, with practice, can be done during daily activities—enhances and optimizes brain, heart and lung function and stimulates the nervous system’s relaxation response. Open Focus meditation complements the practice of Coherent Breathing.

Through the experience of repeated rounds of breathwork and meditation, gentle movement, theoretical background and small group interaction, participating therapists will discover the benefits of these mind-body practices and learn to integrate this knowledge into their clinical practices and into their own lives.

The Ackerman Institute for Families offers a broad range of clinical services and workshops for families and practitioners.  Tuition for the all-day therapist workshop, from 10:00 am to 4 pm, is $125. Five CE credits will be given.  More information can be found at ackerman.org on the Internet, or by calling (212)879-4900 x. 100.

Dr. Brown is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York. He gives over 200 medical lectures every year, including full-day courses for the American Psychiatric Association and other professional groups. He is a certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), Yoga, Qi Gong, and meditation.  His workshops have helped thousands of people deal with everyday stress and enabled survivors of trauma and mass disasters to recover their health and well-being.  Dr. Brown co-authored the award-winning How To Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton, 2009) with Dr. Patricia Gerbarg, and, Dr. Philip Muskin.

Dr. Brown and his wife Dr. Patricia Gerbarg have an Internet site at HaveAHealthyMind.com with mental health information and resources.
