As part of their ongoing commitment to reducing online accessibility barriers, the London Borough of Hillingdon have enabled an innovative new product on their website called BrowseAloud.
BrowseAloud is a text-to-speech solution that reads all accessible website content aloud in a high quality human sounding voice which can be altered to suit the individual’s specific needs. As text is read aloud, words are highlighted;
Stephen Cross, E-Communications Manager for the London Borough of Hillingdon commented about the new addition BrowseAloud, “Delivering an accessible website is a priority for Hillingdon Council. We aim to make our information and services available to the whole community and believe BrowseAloud will help us meet this challenge.”

BrowseAloud has undergone some exciting new changes since the last release; users can now access all the BrowseAloud features with a floating toolbar which includes a talking dictionary, the ability to convert online text to MP3 and a screen masking facility which benefits those with certain visual impairments and learning difficulties.
Other new features include a Translation tool; allowing for single word translations in English, French, Spanish, German or Italian.
Recent councils who have speech enabled with BrowseAloud include Denbighshire Council, London Borough of Harrow and The City of Edinburgh Council.
