The 11th annual How Weird Street Faire is on Sunday May 9, 2010 from Noon to 8pm. There will be ten blocks of art and celebration, and ten stages of music. There will be performances, colorful costumes, vendors from around the world, and much more.

April 13, 2010 - PRLog -- The theme of this year's How Weird Street Faire is "Bollyweird: The Cosmic Dance", celebrating a spirit of cross-cultural appreciation. The faire will end with a special version of the “Cosmic Dance” performed by the faire participants, attempting to break the current record for the World’s Largest Synchronized Bollywood Dance, a tribute to Bollywood’s role as the largest film genre in the world.

The faire will have ten blocks of art and celebration, and ten stages of music. There will be performances and colorful costumes, vendors from around the world with unique and creative wares, non-profit organizations to educate and inspire, exotic food and drinks, and much more. All ages are welcome. Costumes are highly encouraged, and those in costume get discounted admission.

New this year is Fashion Alley, featuring fashion runway shows throughout the day, with stylistic dance music and fashion-related vendors. See the latest fashions from top local designers and artists, hosted by Style/Clash. Fashion Alley will introduce faire-goers to the world of conscious fashion. There will be interactive media and art focused on education and action. Also new this year is Shanti Street, a healing arts zone with yoga, massage therapists, and holistic vendors.

The How Weird Street Faire showcases many different types of electronic music. The music stages are produced by local collectives and music organizations, including Symbiosis, Muti Music, Tantra, Groove Garden, Non Stop Bhangra, Temple Nightclub, Opel, Opulent Temple, Space Cowboys, Brass Tax, Le Harem, Red Marines Festival, Aum Festival, and more.

The main entrance is at Howard and New Montgomery Streets, where you’ll find complimentary bike parking. The How Weird Street Faire is centered at Howard and 2nd Streets, where the city’s newest park will be available for relaxation. The faire’s location, in the heart of the San Francisco SoMa district, is a short walk to Yerba Buena Gardens and the emerging museum district. It is only two blocks from the Montgomery BART station, and near several MUNI lines.

There is a requested donation of $10 (or only $5 if in costume) for the How Weird Street Faire. The full donation buys a Magic Sticker that is potentially worth many times that amount, with discounts at the faire bars and after parties, as well as specials at many of the vendors. The Magic Sticker is how people can support the faire, while getting something back in appreciation.

All three venues are only $10 (or $2 off with the Magic Sticker). Go to any location and get a Magic Bracelet that will get you into all of the others at no additional cost. The after parties are all 21 and over only.

San Francisco’s most unique peace celebration

The How Weird Street Faire is the unofficial start of San Francisco’s famous street fair season, attracting people from around the Bay Area and the world. The faire has grown from a small gathering in 2000 outside of the original World Peace Through Technology Organization headquarters on Howard Street, to over twelve thousand people last year our the new location further down on Howard Street. Over the years, the faire has become a highly-anticipated San Francisco tradition. The How Weird Street Faire celebrates the city’s creativity, community, diversity, and conscious awareness.

The How Weird Street Faire brings together a wide range of eclectic styles and communities. The faire lets people experience a place where cultural diversity is celebrated, and where common appreciations overpower prejudices. Learning the foundations of peace is as simple as walking down the street, and stopping to dance.

The Cosmic Dance

This year’s faire will feature music and art from India and beyond. The center intersection, or heart of the faire, will be a temple devoted to Shiva and the Cosmic Dance.

The Cosmic Dance is a concept from India that represents the movement of the universe, from the galaxies and planets, to all life, to subatomic particles. According to Hindi mythology, Lord Shiva is the Cosmic Dancer who performs his divine movement of creation and destruction.

Fritzof Capra explains, “the Dance of Shiva symbolizes the basis of all existence. At the same time, Shiva reminds us that the manifold forms in the world are not fundamental, but illusory and ever-changing. According to quantum field theory, the dance of creation and destruction is the basis of the very existence of matter.”

Mother’s Day and World Peace

This year, the How Weird Street Faire once again coincides with Mother’s Day. Throughout history, mothers have often led the fight against war. In fact, Mother’s Day has its roots as a peace holiday; from its earliest days reconciling the former enemies of the Union and Confederacy while honoring mothers who had lost family in the Civil War, to its blossoming as the Mother’s Day for Peace in the 1870’s, to the first formal Mother’s Day on May 10, 1908.

Come celebrate peace this Mother’s Day at the How Weird Street Faire. All mothers are welcome for an unforgettable Mother’s Day @ How Weird!

The Overpass
