The ETCS Level 2 is a train control system where trackside signalling is eventually replaced by extending route electronics and transmitting information to the vehicle via GSM-R. The plan is to roll out the system on several major routes in Austria along with the timetable change in 2012/13. Frequentis was commissioned to take over the support role for this highly complex integration project. The completion of the project will establish ÖBB as a technological pioneer. It will be one of the first railway organisations in the world to implement the ETCS Level 2 over such a large area and with the inclusion of main stations.
“We were already familiar with the professionalism and expertise of Frequentis, and interdisciplinary expertise and system integration experience are particularly important in an integration project of this size,” says Peter Kleinschuster, Program Manager ETCS Level 2 at ÖBB, reflecting on the four-year collaboration between Frequentis and ÖBB.
This is the first time in Europe that this kind of special system integration agenda has been entrusted to an external company. ÖBB’s decision was based on the experience gained in similar projects in other European countries.
ETCS is part of the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System), which seeks to create a single European rail system. The implementation of ETCS Level 2 demands compatibility between vehicles, line equipment and the GSM-R network. Frequentis acts as the technical link behind system integration, verifying, documenting and monitoring the compatibility and interoperability of the individual components.
