April 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Mike Segura, a soldier in the U.S. Marine Corps for over 20 years found out that he had bladder cancer in 2005. A letter from the base he had lived on, Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, N.C., informed him in April 2008 that he may have been exposed to toxic chemicals in his drinking water.

"I was diagnosed with cancer in September, 2005. My bladder cancer at age 47 is a signature cancer of the kind of exposure that we were subject to from drinking the water. The big thing I am in shock over is to find out in 2008 an issue that they knew about in 1985," said Mike Segura.

In the past four decades, an estimated 500,000 soldiers and civilians and soldiers were exposed to the tainted drinking water on base. Segura believes his illness was caused by exposure to the toxins that seeped from a dry cleaner and industrial activity into the camp’s water supply.

Nina Segura, sister of Mike Segura was devastated to find out her brother had cancer. As owner of Metaspire Consulting, she focuses on efficiency and effectiveness of patient and customer care so that tragedies like the one at Camp Lejeune can’t happen.

“My brother still suffers today. What can we do to stand for our government branches to get external/objective audits for core things like water on a base camp for those who serve our country? I can only do my part and unfortunately it is on the tail end,” said Segura.

Legislation was passed in February in the Senate called the “Caring for the Families of Camp Lejeune Act”, which would provide medical help to former Marines who were exposed to toxic water at the base and are ill today, and their families. It pushes for answers as to what truly went wrong.
